Few people know that Social Security’s has a website chock full of information about the various benefits they offer.  One interesting page is SSA’s Disability Planner. 

The Page actually contains a lot of links to information about SSA’s Disability programs – Social Security Disability (often called ‘SSD’ or ‘SSDI’) and Supplemental Security Income (called ‘SSI’).  You can find out how you can qualify, how you can apply, who can receive benefits if you are found disabled, and when Medicare kicks in after you are approved for SSDI benefits.

If you are considering filing for Social Security Disability, it is a good resource to introduce you to the programs and help you make some decisions.

I recently learned about a great site for finding Social Security statistics.   Lots of stuff to compare about state agencies, hearing offices (Social Security’s ODAR – the Office of Disability Adjudication and Review), and Administrative Law Judge approval and denial rates.  Here is the link:  http://www.ssdfacts.com/comparison.

With the new Social Security rule prohibiting disclosure of the name of the ALJ that will handle your hearing, it will be harder to make these statistics useful, but you can still get a good feel for how many people are getting denied and approved.

I try to share any resources that may help someone seeking disability benefits when I find out about them. Recently, the Social Security Administration (SSA) issued a new version of SSA Publication 05-10029, its pamphlet titled Disability Benefits. This 16 page pamphlet generally explains the Social Security Disability (SSD) and Supplemental Security Income (SSI) programs offered by Social Security.

It explains things like:

  • Quarters of Coverage to be insured for disability;
  • How to apply for Social Security Disability (you can also see my website for a quick link to their application page);
  • What information you need to apply for disability;
  • How Social Security decides if you are disabled under their system;
  • Family benefits;
  • When you get Medicare if you are found disabled; and
  • How working impacts a disability claim;

Though it does not have much detail, SSA’s Disability Benefits is a good introduction to the Social Security Disability program. If you or someone you know wants to know more about applying for SSD, it is definitely worth the time to read this publication.
